What Is Alcohol Use Disorder?

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a medical condition that makes it hard to stop drinking, even when it’s hurting your health or responsibilities. It includes what many people call alcohol abuse or alcoholism, and it can range from mild to severe.

According to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, about 28.9 million people ages 12 and older—roughly 1 in 10—had AUD in the past year.

If alcohol use feels out of your control or is becoming a regular way to cope, you’re not alone, and you’re not without options. At MPower Wellness, our team is here to help you better understand how alcohol may be affecting your life and to support you with evidence-based care every step of the way.

Together, we’ll create a realistic and supportive plan for healing.

What Increases the Risk of Alcohol Use Disorder?

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Alcohol use disorder doesn’t develop overnight. AUD is the result of many personal, genetic, and environmental factors.

Some of the most common risk factors include:

  • Early exposure to alcohol: Individuals who start drinking before the age of 15 are significantly more likely to develop AUD than those who begin after 21.
  • Genetics and family history: If alcohol addiction runs in your family, your risk is higher. Genetics accounts for about 60% of a person’s vulnerability to AUD.
  • Mental health conditions: Disorders like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD are often linked to alcohol misuse, especially when someone tries to manage symptoms by drinking.
  • History of trauma: Childhood abuse, neglect, or traumatic life events increase the likelihood of using alcohol to cope.

Even drinking in seemingly moderate amounts can become harmful depending on your frequency and individual vulnerability. If these patterns continue, they can lead to changes in your brain that make it harder to stop drinking, even when it’s causing serious harm.

At MPower Wellness, we believe that understanding these risks is key to prevention and early intervention. If you recognize any of these risk factors in your life or a loved one’s life, our team is here to help you explore safe and effective treatment options.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorder isn’t defined by how much you drink, but by how alcohol impacts your life and ability to function. You or someone close to you may be living with AUD without realizing it.

Here are some key warning signs:

  • Drinking more than you intended
  • Feeling unable to cut back or stop
  • Experiencing strong urges or cravings for alcohol
  • Struggling at work, school, or with responsibilities
  • Withdrawing from loved ones or losing interest in activities
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms like shakiness, nausea, or sweating when not drinking

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many people find themselves using alcohol to cope or feel normal, even as it takes a toll on their health and relationships.

You may also notice:

  • Drinking in secret
  • Feeling guilt or shame afterward
  • Needing alcohol to get through the day

Research shows, only 7.6% of those with AUD receive treatment, despite the emotional, physical, and social toll AUD can take. Don’t make the same mistake.

These experiences are valid and treatable with the right support. At MPower Wellness, we meet you where you are. Our team listens without judgment and helps you take the next step toward healing with compassion and clinical care.

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

Alcohol withdrawal can be uncomfortable and, in some cases, dangerous. If you’ve been drinking heavily, it’s important to seek professional help when you stop.

Research shows that professional support during withdrawal not only improves safety but also reduces the risk of relapse. At MPower Wellness, our team is here to listen without judgment and guide you toward the care you need.

Early withdrawal symptoms may include:

  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Shakiness
  • Sweating
  • Headaches

Severe symptoms may include:

  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Delirium tremens
  • Confusion
  • Heart palpitations

Going through withdrawal without support increases the risk of relapse. Our addiction treatment professionals are here to help you manage symptoms and begin your recovery journey safely.

Comprehensive Treatment Options at MPower Wellness

Our alcohol addiction treatment programs are built to meet your individual needs. We start with a thorough assessment and build a plan that supports you physically, emotionally, and socially.

Here’s how we help:

Medical Detox

If you experience strong withdrawal symptoms, detoxing under medical supervision is the safest choice. Our team helps you stabilize and feel comfortable as alcohol leaves your system. Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild to severe, and may include sweating, nausea, tremors, and anxiety. In some cases, alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening, making professional care essential.

Inpatient and Residential Care

This structured level of care gives you a safe place to recover. With 24-hour support, you can focus fully on your healing while receiving therapy, medical care, and peer support. Inpatient care is especially helpful for individuals with co-occurring disorders or a history of relapse. It provides a strong foundation for recovery by removing outside distractions and offering consistent care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is a full-day program that allows you to return home in the evenings. It offers intensive therapy and support while giving you the flexibility to stay connected to your responsibilities. This program is ideal for those who need more structure than outpatient programs can provide but are ready to take steps toward independence.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program meets several times a week, offering a balance of structure and independence. This is ideal if you’re working or caring for family while receiving care. The IOP model allows you to apply what you learn in therapy in real-life situations, with the continued support of your treatment team. At MPower Wellness, our team walks beside you throughout the recovery process, celebrating your progress and helping you stay accountable.

Outpatient Services

Outpatient programs provide ongoing support through individual therapy, group counseling, and educational sessions. This level of care works well for those in early recovery or stepping down from more intensive services. It is a key part of continuing care that helps maintain momentum in your recovery journey.

We also offer specialized disorder programs for individuals seeking treatment for both alcohol and drug and alcohol addiction. Our services are tailored to your individual needs and aligned with your goals for healing.

MOST INSURANCE ACCEPTED

Up to 100% of the costs covered by insurance. At MPower Wellness, we accept most insurance plans. Verify your insurance to get information about your coverage.

Therapies That Support Long-Term Recovery

We use evidence-based care methods to help you heal and grow from your substance use disorder. Your treatment may include:

  • Individual counseling to explore your experiences and triggers in a safe, private space
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy to identify and change negative thinking patterns and behaviors
  • Motivational interviewing to strengthen your internal motivation and resolve ambivalence toward change
  • Family therapy and family counseling to help families rebuild trust, improve communication, and work toward healing together
  • Support groups that offer connection, encouragement, and a sense of belonging throughout recovery

When needed, we may also include medications such as:

  • Naltrexone, which blocks the effects of alcohol
  • Acamprosate, which helps balance your brain chemistry
  • Disulfiram, which causes unpleasant symptoms when alcohol is consumed

These medications are most effective when paired with therapy, routine support, and personalized care. This approach enhances outcomes and helps you remain engaged in your recovery from substance use. At MPower Wellness, our team continuously monitors your progress and adjusts your treatment plan to reflect your growth.

Treating the Whole You with Dual Diagnosis Care

Many people with alcohol addiction also experience mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. We treat both conditions together through an integrated approach called dual diagnosis treatment. Our licensed social workers and behavioral health experts provide the tools you need to recover emotionally, not just physically.

If left untreated, mental health disorders can trigger relapse and make recovery more difficult. Our program helps you develop healthy coping strategies and emotional resilience so that you can manage your mental health and maintain your sobriety.

Our recovery journey also addresses the needs of caregivers and families affected by addiction. We work closely with family members to support healing and reduce the risk of codependent dynamics. With the right support, healing can ripple outward to your entire community. At MPower Wellness, our team continues to be a source of guidance and compassion as you grow.
